Josef Schulz was an Austrian painter and elementary school teacher. After attending the teacher training college, he moved to Vienna and was a guest student in Othmar Zeiler's master class at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Due to the consequences of a war injury, he retired from teaching in 1927. In 1928 Schulz joined Alois Delug's master class at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, and in 1930 and 1931 he undertook study trips to Paris and Berlin. From 1933 he belonged to the special association of Austrian artists based in Salzburg. After working with drawings, Schulz turned to oil painting, with Anton Faistauer being a particular role model. Under his guidance he worked on the frescoes in the foyer of the Small Festival Hall in Salzburg. With the participation of Schulz, the Salzburg Art Association was rebuilt after the Second World War. Schulz was a founding member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists in Salzburg and a member of the Innviertler Artists' Guild. In 1946 he was appointed to the art advisory board of the Salzburg provincial government, and in 1948 he was awarded honorary membership of the Salzburg Cultural Association. The Ministry of Education honoured Schulz with the Art Promotion Prize. From 1950 he was a member of the commission for awarding the Austrian State Prize. Other honours were the award of the title Professor h. c. and the Golden Medal of the City of Salzburg. In 1968 the state of Salzburg honoured him with the Silver Medal of Merit. The legacy of Josef Schulz is in the Salzburg Museum.
