The spirit does not force matter into subordination”. (Gutai Manifesto, 1956) Hsiao Dômoto was born in Kyoto in 1928 into a wealthy family. His father was a famous collector of traditional Japanese art and his uncle Inshô Dômoto, was an equally famous Japanese painter in the Nihonga style. In his early years, Hisao Dômoto initially remained true to the family spirit and studied traditional painting at the Kyoto school of art. He enjoyed some success in Japan, but soon discovered contemporary western art, particularly at the 1952 Salon de Mai in Japan – where the emerging Japanese avant-garde, the Gutai Group, was represented – and during a trip to Europe in the same year. From then onwards he adopted western techniques, and was attracted first to Surrealism, but later devoted himself exclusively to abstract art. Dômoto settled in France in 1955. At this time, his works were characterised by their concrete content. He initially made a name for himself with airy, romantic calligraphy in the manner of Zao Wou-Ki, and approximated the style of the Lyrical Abstraction group. While working with the Parisian Galerie Stadler between 1957 and 1960 he discovered his own style, and from 1960 developed his concept of “Solution de Continuité”. As the present painting from 1961 shows, his works from these years are characterised by an impastoed application of the paint on the canvas. His works are a reflection of spontaneous improvisation and appear to be a direct expression of his artistic feelings. He makes use of a broad and richly contrasting colour palette, so that the paint dances on the canvas like flames, wind, or frantic waves at sea with an almost meditative flow. Dômoto also seems to experiment with the ductility and malleability of colour pigments. The sometimes flowing and energetic brush strokes, the blurred areas, and the splashes of colour appeal to the imagination of the viewer: clouds, mountain landscapes, rocky formations and waterfalls take shape before our inner eye. The compositions on the canvas may burn in splendid colour, creating a powerful depth and density, with movements of both resurgence and fading away, of sunrise and sunset, bright and at the same time mysterious. Der Schweizer Bildhauer und Maler Josef Staub ist 1931 in Baar geboren. Er macht eine Ausbildung zum Maurer und Bauführer, allerdings wendet sich sein Interesse schnell der Bildenden Kunst und der Bildhauerei zu. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung ist überwiegend autodidaktisch. Mit Anfang 20 liegt sein Schwerpunkt bereits vorwiegend bei der Malerei. Mit Spachtel und pastosen Farben entstehen seine ungegenständlichen, kraftvollen und ausgewogenen Kompositionen. Nach seiner ersten erfolgreichen Ausstellung 1956 in Zug, erhält er zwei Mal, 1957 und 1959, ein Eidgenössisches Kunststipendium. Seine erste Ausstellung in Zürich findet 1959 in der Galerie Palette statt. Der Schritt zum Plastischen erfolgt in den 60er Jahren. Er experimentiert mit Aluminium- und Bronzeguss, und ist stetig auf der Suche nach einer immer glatteren und glänzenderen Oberfläche, bis er in den 70er Jahren das Material des Chromstahls für sich entdeckt. Josef Staub beteiligt sich von nun an immer häufiger an Skulpturenausstellungen im In- und Ausland, und er bekommt zahlreiche Aufträge für Kunst am Bauprojekte in den Schweizer Kantonen Zürich, Zug, Aargau, Solothurn und St. Gallen. In den 70er und 80er Jahren ist er zunehmend mit internationalen Aufträgen, in Spanien, Frankreich, Italien und den USA beschäftigt. Seine erste spiralförmige Chromstahlskulptur entsteht ebenfalls in den 70er Jahren. Das Ergebnis jahrelangen Experimentierens reflektiert sich gut in unseren zwei vorliegenden Skulpturen, die in den Jahren 1995 und 1997 entstehen: die perfekt gearbeiteten Hohlblechkörper mit einem sanften Seidenglanz und einer sachlich-kühlen, jedoch nicht kalten Oberfläche. Dank des Chromstahls hat Staub das Material gefunden, das seinen Intentionen voll entspricht. Seine geometrisch-abstrakten Formen entwickeln sich massgeblich aus Linien und Flächen. Die von uns angebotene Spiralform (lot 3751) und die Segelform (Lot 3748) imponieren durch ihre Kühnheit der Konstruktion bei gleichzeitiger Leichtigkeit und Eleganz. Durch die geschwungenen Bänder, die der Chromstahl in den Raum schreibt, wird ein starker Wechsel von Licht und Schatten erzeugt. Die Lichtverhältnisse erwecken die geschmeidigen Formen zum Leben. Jede seiner Skulpturen hat ihr eigenes Licht. Der Betrachter findet den passenden Winkel, indem er sich um die plastischen Körper bewegt. Sowohl die Spiralform als auch die Segelform haben vollkommen unterschiedliche Erscheinungen, je nachdem von welcher Seite man sie betrachtet. Bei der Entstehung seiner Kunstwerke steht keine mathematischtheoretische Methode im Vordergrund, sondern er geht empirisch vor: er erstellt zunächst Kartonmodelle, von denen Schnittmuster gedreht, geformt und in eine räumliche Ordnung gebracht werden. Daraufhin schafft er erste Gipsmodelle, die seine ersten Ideen konkretisieren. Nach zahlreichen Variationen setzt er schliesslich sein Ergebnis in Chromstahl um.
