Lot no. 280
Joseph BONAPARTE. 3 minutes of letters, signed with an initials, Point Breeze November 1828-December 1829, to the Count of Melito 8 pages in-4. Interesting correspondence to his former minister. 15 November 1828, in reaction to the publication of Girardin's souvenirs, he puts his papers in order: "you have to burn everything that is useless, this century is the century of the writerly, and you have to write by force to defend yourself, and burn everything that can be harmful to yourself and your friends"... Bayard's bankruptcy caused him to lose "a sum as considerable as the value of Prangins"; the people responsible for selling his valuables stole from him... - 15 May 1829. He accuses the Duke of Bassano of being behind the slander of Norvins and Pons de l'Hérault, and of having sold "the original correspondence of the Sovereigns contemporary with the Emperor" in London for 30,000 pounds sterling; his wife and daughters are in Rome... - 30 December. Mèneval and a few others remained perfect; others stir up the mud, like Bourrienne: "I read his libels against his benefactor & against his family"... Attached is a letter (minute) to Tito Manzi, Baltimore 13 January 1828, hoping that France will be "governed by the son of the Emperor Napoleon"... (3 p. in-4).
