Joseph BONAPARTE. 6 minutes of letters (4 signed with his initials) and a dictated manuscript, with some autograph corrections, 1822-1833, to his brother Lucien Bonaparte prince of Canino 13 and 4 pages in-4. A very interesting set of letters to his brother Lucien. In addition to family news, these letters are of great political interest, of which we will only give an outline. Philadelphia 10 May 1822. After a brief analysis of the situation in Europe, he rejects claims that Napoleon has made donations: "the public might believe that I have actually given money to the Emperor"; he mentions the spoliation by the Bourbons of the 800,000 francs he had lent the Emperor. He deplores the publication of their brother Louis' book on Holland... Pointe Breeze 27th October 1823. He had to respond to the calumnies of Las Cases. - 19 September 1830, he was ready to leave to facilitate Napoleon II's return to France. - Philadelphia 30 March 1832. Long letter on the hope of a return of Napoleon II in France and the manoeuvres of Lafayette. - London 25 November 1832. If France remains closed to them, he will return to America. A copy of Lucien's poem, Ode Politique par un Proscrit. La Républicaine sur l'air de la Marseillaise (1833) is accompanied by a letter from Joseph (London 23 July 1833) criticising it: "you write today as you did before 1815 and St Helena", with a copy of his comments.
