He remembers "how your zeal for the sciences and for military service made you multiply the opportunities to make yourself useful", but he pointed out inaccuracies in his book on Spain, particularly in the dedication, especially concerning the role of Marshal Soult. Joseph took upon himself "the responsibility for a great movement which was not known to the emperor and which the marshal assumed did not suit him. It was above all as King of Spain that I was acting in ordering this movement, the success of which alone could end the war and consolidate my power"; and he explains his policy in Spain...
