Simon Alexandre Jean, Marquis de Galliffet, came from an illustrious noble family, originally from the Doubs region, who had settled in Provence in the 16th century. He was born on 22 June 1716 in Le Tholonet and died on 30 January 1793 in Pisa. Simon-Alexandre was President of the Chamber of the Parliament of Provence in Aix, inherited the Principality of Martigues and married Madeleine de Léotard d'Entrages. There is an unsigned letter from Simon Alexandre to Versailles on the subject of the trial of the Jesuits before the parliaments of France (1761-1770), attested to in our portrait by the two volumes on the right, entitled "Annales Jésuitques" and "Compte rendu". He was the great-grandfather of the famous General de Galliffet (1830-1909). We can compare our painting with the Portrait of Louis Stanislas Xavier de France, Count of Provence, future Louis XVIII (1755-1824). Here we find the same armchair, position of the model and arrangement of the books and drapery on the right (Signed canvas, 194 x 137.5 CM) on the art market (anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 12 December 1990, no. 9, reproduced in colour).
