Joseph CHAUMET (1852-1928) Christus Vincit A silver and natural wood calvary depicting Christ on the cross between the Virgin Mary and St John, with Mary Magdalene at his feet, all resting on a round carved stone base representing the world. H. 17 cm BL In its original green morocco paper case with velvet and silk lining, numbered JP History : Joseph Chaumet (1852-1928), a very devout and religious man, became involved in defending the Catholic faith in the face of the major legislative upheavals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, notably the Combes Law. Between 1894 and 1904, he created three spectacular works of religious goldsmithery: La Via Vitae, Christus vincit and La France Catholique. A renowned silversmith, he took part in all the major exhibitions of his time, including the Paris exhibition in 1900, where he was awarded the Gold Medal for his Christus Vincit. Some of these motifs were produced in small series. These small works were prized as gifts. Our example, which appears to belong to one of these series, is similar to the one on display at the exhibition "Divines joailleries, l'art de Joseph Chaumet (1852-1928)" from 14 June 2014 to 4 January 2015 at the Musée du Hiéron.
