Joseph Chaumet took over the jewelry store from his father-in-law Prosper Morel in 1885 and managed it as director until his death in 1928. The company's beginnings can be traced back to the time of Napoleon Bonaparte, when Marie-Étienne Nitot made a name for himself as court jeweler and personal supplier to Empress Joséphine. The company was the first to move to 15 Place Vendôme, where the Ritz Paris now stands. After the fall of the French Empire, Jean-Baptiste and Jules Fossin and then Valentin and Prosper Morel continued to run the company. During the Belle Époque, Chaumet's designs became very popular among the haute-volée. The company created elaborate tiaras and jewelry in the Art Nouveau and Art Déco styles for various European royal families and the aristocracy. His work was highly sought after for its craftsmanship and aesthetic quality. Chaumet attracted a prestigious clientele, including international royalty such as princes and maharajas of India and various members of the European nobility. In 1907, the house moved to 12 Place Vendôme, and made the Hôtel Baudard de Saint-James the legendary home of Chaumet. Only a few of Joseph Chaumet's large-format sculptures have been offered on the art market to date. Das Unternehmen schuf aufwändige Diademe und Schmuckstücke im Stil des Art Nouveau und Art Déco für verschiedene europäische Königshäuser und die Aristokratie. Seine Arbeiten waren aufgrund ihrer handwerklichen und ästhetischen Qualität sehr begehrt. Das Haus Chaumet zog eine prestigeträchtige Kundschaft an, darunter internationale Königshäuser wie die Prinzen und Maharadscha von Indien und verschiedene Mitglieder des europäischen Adels. Im Jahr 1907 zog das Haus an die Place Vendôme 12 um und machte das Hôtel Baudard de Saint-James zu Chaumets legendärer Stammadresse. Nur wenige grossformatige Skulpturen von Joseph Chaumet wurden bisher auf dem Kunstmarkt angeboten. Nennenswert ist eine eindrückliche christlich-religiöse Gold- und Edelsteinskulptur mit dem Titel "Christus Vincit" sowie eine Elfenbeinskulptur der "France Combattante" (beide bei Christie's versteigert). Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet.
