Lot no. 304
Joseph FOUCHÉ. L.A.S. (minute corrected and signed with an initials, with erasures and corrections), Linz 29 March [1820?], to H.R.H. the Prince de Montfort (Jérôme Bonaparte) 2 pages in-4. Long letter from exile to the former King of Westphalia. [Linz was one of the last places of exile for Fouché, who only left this town to go to Trieste, where he died on 20 December 1820]. Fouché stated that he would leave Linz with no regrets, especially if it meant getting closer to his illustrious correspondent. He wanted to settle his children outside France: "It is not safe for them to live in their former homeland. The powerful monarchy that had been built up over the last 20 years, and which had already acquired the strength that time gives to everything, was being demolished piece by piece. The institutions that were put in place of the imperial institutions were not in harmony with those that remained. This is what establishes a continual conflict between passions and laws and will lead to real anarchy. I predict that what happened to the Greeks and Romans will happen to us"... The French lack neither wit nor talent, but the science of government is not within everyone's reach, and even if the Enlightenment has broadened our understanding, this is not enough to make us obey... "Your Highness must have noticed that the people of France are not very well educated. Your Highness must have noticed that the men who call themselves statesmen and who show the most zeal for the monarchy have voted instructions that are contrary to it. I confess that I still have the simplicity to believe that the necessary consequence of freedom of the press is the Republic. This is undoubtedly why I remain in exile and why my personal freedom is circumscribed. It is feared that I will become an ardent missionary for the imperial monarchy. Rest assured, I no longer have the exhilaration of youth, I am only thinking of my own salvation"...
