Joseph Mallord William Turner (painting by) - Stormy Landscape oil on canvas 39.5 x 60 cm The painting depicts a vast landscape traversed by changing atmospheric light, constructed through a free and vaporous pictorial material that gives the scene a strong evocative character. The composition unfolds along a vast expanse traversed by watercourses and barren terrain, while the sky, dominated by dense moving clouds, assumes a central role in the emotional definition of the image. The work shows clear affinities with English landscape painting of the first decades of the 19th century and in particular with the figurative culture developed around J. M. W. Turner. In fact, the atmospheric construction of the sky, the luminous dissolution of forms and the almost visionary rendering of the landscape recall that Romantic sensibility that emphasised natural effects, climatic mutability and the emotional perception of space. The dense, swirling and blurred brushstrokes, combined with the descriptive reduction of natural elements, suggest an interest aimed more at the rendering of light and atmosphere than at the topographical definition of the place. Particularly significant is the tonal gradation built on warm earth tones and deep browns, interrupted by the luminous flashes that emerge on the horizon and accentuate the sense of vastness and solitude of the scene. In terms of stylistic features and pictorial quality, the painting appears referable to the English Romantic school of the early 19th century, within a figurative culture close to Turneri's modes in which the landscape takes on a profoundly poetic and atmospheric value.
