Vien 28.34 x 23.62 in. 72 x 60 cm Provenance: Private collection, Ile-de-France Joseph-Marie Vien produced several series of oval paintings around 1754-1755. At the Salon of 1755, Vien exhibited under the same number Buste d'une vestale couronnée de roses, Prêtresse tressant une couronne de fleurs and Prêtresse brodant pour l'ornement d'un temple1. A sketch for the Prêtresse brodant pour l'ornement d'un temple and preparatory drawings for the three paintings in the Salon of 1755 are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Béziers2. Three other subjects listed in the artist's catalogue raisonné can be related to our painting: Jeune fille venant de former une couronne, Jeune grecque considérant un nid d'oiseaux and Une femme qui arrose un pot de fleurs3. 1.
