Lot no. 201
Joseph ROUMANILLE (1818-1891). L.A.S. "J.R.", Avignon 10 November 1878, [to Victor Hugo] 4 pages in-8 filled with very tight handwriting, on his letterhead J. Roumanille, Libraire-éditeur, Avignon. Long letter to Victor Hugo about the Félibrige.
Roumanille denounces in particular the manoeuvres of his "dear enemy" Aubanel, who had just given a speech in Paris in which he openly attacked him: "he does not want the fact that, as early as 1835, and a little later, in 1846-47, I had opened up a new path for the Muse, that I had, a little later, appealed to the youngest Muses"... He recalls his publications of Les Provençales, Les Nouvè and L'Armana prouvençau in 1854... He deplores the dissensions caused by a few "young, hungry malcontents" who dress up in bad Provençal "the ideas that are current among the most daring, most outrageous parnassians"... He recounts the indignant reactions of Mistral, who had formally forbidden Aubanel to "speak in the name of the Félibres.
This did not stop Aubanel from protesting, so much so that he had "the great chief Calendal [Mistral] come here in person. Great heavens, there must be danger in the house for the Capoulié to be disturbed like this"... This turned into a comedy, and Roumanille laughed heartily, but "our incandescent revolutionary might well weep"... Mistral, however, understood very well and took the matter seriously, because "the whole Félibren Olympus is going to tremble"... "How all these little things amuse my friends! How amusing all this pettiness is to my sixty-something years! [...] Surely the beginnings of the grenadier, whom I respect all the same, whom I forgive, whom I would like to be able to calm down, soften, bring back, did not herald such battles!"... He fears that the evil is too deep to be curable, it is up to Calendal to advise. ...". Here I am, buried alive [...]. I'm not even a date, it was Mistral who, in 1835, began to purify, reconstitute and spell the language"... Soon, it will be Aubanel "who will have inaugurated our renaissance, with the publication of his Vénus d'Arles"...
