Joseph Wenglein. (1845 Munich - 1919 Bad Tölz)
Autumn landscape with resting hunters
An atmospheric landscape impression by Wenglein, created in 1884, which reflects his great mastery in capturing the light and sky as well as nature in a sensitive, subtle way. Wenglein studied with Johann Gottfried Steffan from 1866 to 1870 and with Adolf Lier from 1870 to 1873, who introduced him to the artistic impulses of the Barbizon School. He became a professor in 1883 and an honorary member of the Munich Academy in 1886. Together with Ludwig Willroider and Adolf Lier, Wenglein was one of the last main representatives of the old Munich landscape school. One of Wenglein's favourite motifs was the moss and moorland landscapes of Upper Bavaria, which he also painted with hunters. In the year in which the present painting was created, he showed comparable works at the Berlin Academy and the Vienna Annual Exhibition: "Im Moos", "Aus dem Ampermoos" and "Herbstlandschaft". Oil on canvas; signed and dated on the lower left, (18)84 with the location Munich. Remainder of original exhibition label with artist's inscription verso, old label of Galerie Heinemann, Munich; 58 cm x 78 cm. Frame.
