Lot no. 123
Josephine Baker
Large automaton figurine in polychrome composition featuring the famous dancer, naked, wearing a large pair of creoles. The arms are articulated, as are the chest and navel, which are fitted with rotating umbilicals. The umbilicals are powered by a wind-up mechanism on the doll's back, which triggers a music box that plays the tune La Tonkinoise. Large flat sandals allow the figure to stand upright.
Circa 1930
Height: 53.5 cm
Damage and missing parts (including a missing finger and a bent nose). Restorations (including repaints and fabric-covered chest umbilicals).
