First edition of this monument of twentieth-century literature. Officially published on 2 February 1922, Joyce's birthday. Only two copies came off the presses on the planned day due to difficulties with the famous blue cover, the publication of the following copies was staggered from 9 September, the copies on Arches laid paper came off the presses from 13 February and those on the first paper from 4 March. The 150 copies on Arches vellum came off the Darantière presses much larger than the other papers (26.2 x 20.1 cm compared with 23.7 x 18.5 cm), earning them the nickname "Giant Joyce". Bound in full vellum, with blue morocco title-piece. First cover preserved. (some foxing, cover soiled, newspaper clippings on the title page and on pages 256-257, foxing on the edges).
