Bereits früh spezialisierte sich Juan de Arellano auf Blumenstillleben, nicht zuletzt beeinflusst von den flämischen und italienischen Werken dieser Gattung, die in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 17. Jahrhunderts in die Sammlungen des Madrider Hofes und des spanischen Adels gekommen waren. Dennoch gelang ihm die Entwicklung eines eigenen, unverwechselbaren Stils, der in den Gemälden der 1660er Jahre voll und ganz ausgereift erscheint. Auch unser Werk ordnet Dr. Fred Meijer eben dieser Schaffenszeit zu. Bereits um 1646 hatte Arellano in der Calle Atocha in Madrid einen Kunsthandel eröffnet, wo er sowohl eigene als auch Werke anderer Künstler verkaufte. Provenance In a rhenish private collection for several decades. Juan de Arellano specialised in flower still lifes early in his career. He was influenced by the early 17th century Flemish and Italian works of this genre in the collections of the Spanish aristocracy and the court collection of Madrid. Despite this, he was still able to develop his own unique style which appears in its mature state in the works of the 1660s, and Dr Fred Meijer attributes the present work to this period. Arellano opened an art dealership in Calle Atocha in Madrid in around 1646 where he sold both his own works and those of other artists.
