The manuscript, which comes from the collection of the Budapest rabbi Davi Kaufmann, was probably created in Italy in the mid-18th century. It is characterised by the rich ornamentation typical of Esther scrolls (megillah) and is one of the most important writings in Judaism. The story of Esther is read publicly in the synagogue on the feast of Purim and reflects the liberation of the Jews from Persia, which is also the subject of the feast. Kaufmann (1852-1899) was a professor at the rabbinical seminary in Budapest and, in addition to his passion for collecting, maintained an extensive correspondence with Jewish scholars of his time.
