JUDEO ARAMAIC TERRACOTTA DEVIL TRAP BOWL
Ca. AD 600 - 800. A lovely Judeo-Aramaic terracotta bowl with an inverted conical body widening to the rim. Fine black lines of inscription spiral around the interior. Bowls like this were traditionally buried face down under houses to catch demons and thus protect the houses. They were also known as incantation bowls or demon bowls. Size: 60mm x 155mm; Weight: 260g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery; previously acquired at the art market in Vienna; formerly in an Austrian collection formed prior to 2000.
