Lot no. 185
JUIN Alphonse (1888-1967). L. A. S., Paris, 4 February 1946, to General de Gaulle; 3 1/2 pages in-4 on his letterhead Le Général Juin. Alarming picture of the state of France after de Gaulle's departure from power. "Under your reign, there was a single will to which everything clung and which drove the whole game. When it disappeared, it gave way to larval wills that oppose each other in places and are trying to find a component. It is fortunate for them that the "financial hole" has been discovered at the right time to offer them a programme and give them a first reason to exercise themselves. At the moment, therefore, it's all about finances, i.e. restrictions, and of course national defence is taking a serious hit. Juin points out the major cuts in the defence budget. Then he describes the worrying situation in Indochina and North Africa... And he concludes: "We are in the middle of the Directoire's bad patch, with empty coffers and the enemy on our borders. It can only end as you think. In the meantime, shoot rabbits and wild boar and build up your strength. You've got nothing better to do.
