Lot no. 4
Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY. 8 L.A.S., 1 P.S. and a signed photograph, 1855-1871 and n.d.; all mounted on tabs in a small folio volume, half morocco with garnet-red corners (Canape). Interesting collection of letters and documents. Photograph (cdv format) by Ad. Braun & Cie, signed on the back in red ink. L.A.S. to Mme Prosper VIALLON at the Hôtel du Préau (1 p. in-8 in red ink, envelope with wax seal), Wednesday, after a missed appointment. 2 L.A.S. to Jean RAMBOSSON. - 24 December 1855 (3 p. in-8 on pink paper). He asks him, in Nicolardot's absence, to drop by his porter's house and forward to him the letters that have arrived at his home in La Bastide d'Armagnac via Roquefort (Landes): "This is where I have my headquarters, & where you can write to me". He would like to know if Rambosson succeeds in his plans, if he writes in Pitre Chevalier's journal. He advises him not to make any "near or distant reference to my sister-in-law and my niece with whom you have sometimes met me"; he will explain why. "I am here in complete solitude, studying the landscapes of the country in soft, almost tepid weather - autumnal weather, even though it is winter. I work like a Benedictine and all I miss about Paris is the pleasure of ringing the bell with you"... - 4 January 1856 (2 p. in-8). Asks him to drop by Nicolardot's, who has "three volumes given to him for me in the country", which he needs most urgently... L.A.S. to M. ESCUDIER (1 p. in-8 in red ink, addressed), sending him an article: "Don't shout, O Ingoulafre! - what I am sending you is good! You'll get as much this evening, because now I'm on the slope and I'm going downhill! So you think all you have to do is say Pst! Pst! to inspiration for it to come"... 3 L.A.S. to his friend Théophile SILVESTRE (3, 3 and 2 p. in-8). - Saint-Sauveur 5 June [1871]. His father owed so much that Barbey and his brother had to sell their "ancestral properties. A bitterness among all the other bitternesses of this cursed time! He would later go to see him in Cherbourg, "& to combine with you what we could do to live in this society [...] I saw everything that could be seen during the siege, and what I saw of the cowardly, the undisciplined, the drunkardly, the godless, but above all the stupid, only authorised despair"... He salutes the "great painter Millet, the honour of this Normandy that I love a little more"... - Saint-Sauveur 11th September 1871. He goes to see him in Cherbourg... " My father's big house has been sold and I am currently staying with my brother (not the Abbé), who is unpleasantly busy sorting out interests [...] Paris is hateful to me. I shall not return until the latest possible date, and I shall leave as soon as I can"... - Tuesday morning 12th. He is "like a shuttlecock on two rackets", about his possible entry into the Constitutionnel, and his collaboration with the Nain jaune: "I am so happy to have this democratic journal, which does more for authoritarians like me than the Catholic and imperialist Pinard !!!!"... L.A.S. to a lady, Paris, Saturday (2 p. in-8 with the motto Never more). He was unable to reply to her letter: "I was in conclave. I wasn't making a Pope, since, unfortunately, I'm not a cardinal, - but I was making an article, since, unfortunately, I'm a journalist. Now, when I make an article, I'm bawled out like a cardinal, and even the letters that reach me, I don't read them"... P.S. with 2 autograph additions, [1859 ?] (1 p. in-4, tax stamp). Treaty with the publisher Amyot for the publication of his works: Les Hommes et les œuvres, 4 volumes; and Les Bas-Bleus. An article by Charles Buet on Barbey d'Aurevilly, journaliste (La Chronique moderne, June 1889) is mounted at the head; and at the end is Paul Verlaine's article on Barbey d'Aurevilly in Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui (no. 282), illustrated with a portrait by Coll-Toc.
