[Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY]. Achille ANGER-BILLARDS (1826-1906) prelate, friend of Barbey. L.A.S., Notre-Dame de la Délivrance 3 August 1888, to "My dear Master" [Jules] 3 pages in-8. He expresses his heartfelt thanks for the precious autographed books brought by Louise Read for him and M. Lefoulon; Barbey can say in Paris: "over there, in the depths of my beloved province, people are throwing themselves at my books like starving people, to devour the genius that the Good Lord has poured into them through my pen. I am the heavenly medium who divinely bewitches not only spirits, but entire souls and who makes them communicate, by means of this mysterious fluid and the passes of my intoxicating style from this ultra-terrestrial world where genius & it push and carry with them the noble docilities of this world. We others, dear Master, are of those docile few, who hear your teaching harmonies, and who allow ourselves to be lifted, like aerostats lighter than the heavy air of this world, towards the ethereal regions of the eternally Beautiful and True! In addition to Miss Read, he also thanks "M. Landry, the skilful finder of Le Prêtre Marié". He added in a postscript: "Your disciples are multiplying": the Archbishop of Tunis, to whom he had made "a gift of a copy of Les Écrivains Religieux, cannot get over the strength and beauty of your book [...] he is completely of your opinion on the way to speak apostolically instead of fitting into the thin mould of the sermon-thesis, which is really worn out! He asked Miss Read to send him a number of Barbey's works, which he listed: Le Prêtre Marié, Les Bas-Bleus, Les Prophètes du Passé, the Memoranda "with reduced prices if possible"...
