Lot no. 67
[Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY]. Box containing objects that belonged to Barbey d'Aurevilly. Box in elm burl with marquetry cover, inside lining in light blue brocaded silk with white flowers; 27 x 19.5 x 12 cm; the key is enclosed. Aurevillian relics.
The box contains :
- a bottle-green tie trimmed with lace at the ends;
- a used quill pen;
- a wooden letter opener with a carved handle;
- a small brush (moustache brush?);
- an unbleached silk scarf (torn in the middle);
- a piece of black velvet with stripes;
- 2 small pieces of white moiré silk.
The provenance of these objects is documented in a L.A.S. from Charlotte André Mare (31 March 1936), widow of the decorator and painter André Mare (1885-1932) who illustrated several of Barbey's works: they had been given, along with other objects, books and manuscripts, by Louise Read to Louis Yver, curator of the Musée Barbey d'Aurevilly in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, with permission to sell them in order to maintain the museum and support itself. In July-August 1929, André Mare bought several of these relics from Yver, for himself and for Mrs Jeanne Walter. Here are some extracts from André Mare's notebooks (see sale of Barbey's clothes and objects from Mare on 12 June 1984): [1 July 1929] "I went to see Yver at his house [...] he showed me his manuscripts, his autographs and some of Barbey's memorabilia [...] He is gradually selling his treasures, but the old fox is not unaware of their value"... [16 August] "I bought him [...] a bottle-green satin tie with lace tips for 100 Fr"...
A certificate a.s. from Jacques Morland (1876-1931) lists these objects, which he sold on 6 April 1936 on behalf of Mrs Jeanne Walter to Dr Georges Soalhat, giving the provenance.
