Lot no. 994
Jules BRETON (1827-1906)
Vendangeuse
Oil on canvas, signed, dated "1866" and dedicated lower left "à Gustave Vattier, souvenirs affectueux".
H. 40 cm - W. 32.3 cm HVS
Our painting is similar to the central figure in "Vendanges à Château Lagrange", exhibited at the 1864 Salon (N°256) and now in the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha (USA). Also, the "Vendangeuse" sold at Artcurial, Paris, on 9 June 2021, lot 239.
We can recognise here the man of letters Gustave Vattier (1827-1914) who published a review of the Salon of 1865 in which he evoked the art of Jules Breton: "Without departing from the truth which is the mark of his talent, M. Breton arrives at style; the impression he produces is just as accurate while becoming greater and more poetic; he does not embellish the figures he represents, but he accentuates them more proudly and gives them the grandeur that suits them". (in "le courrier du Dimanche", 1865).
We would like to thank Annette Bourrut Lacouture, Marie-Isabelle Pinet and Agnès Penot for kindly confirming the authenticity of this painting. It will be included in the catalogue raisonné of the painter's work currently in preparation.
