Our watercolour is described by Marie Madeleine Aubrun opposite the painting: Interior of a farm in Berry: "Dressed in a white skirt, a red blouse and wearing a Berrichon bonnet, a peasant woman is scouring a copper cauldron placed on the slab of the well; nearby, vegetables and kitchen utensils. To the left, a cockerel and a few hens. Further on, lit by a low window, a corner of the room with two children standing next to a bedridden woman. On the ceiling, washing is drying on a long line. A harness and various utensils are hanging on the wall, near a small cupboard in the right foreground.
This work, which stands out for its Dutch lighting and the masterly virtuosity of its execution, was not painted from life but from a drawing taken in the Berry region.
"Jules Dupré executed a very elaborate watercolour of reduced dimensions from this painting" (i.e. this is our watercolour).
