JULES-ELIE DELAUNAY (1828-1891) The triumph of prosperity Oil on canvas Signed, dated 1859 and located "Rome" lower right Approximately 300 cm in diameter (Stapled to a panel for transport) Provenance : Large property in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin Jules-Elie Delaunay studied in the studios of Hippolyte Flandrin (1809- 1864) and Louis Lamothe (1822-1869) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was runner-up for the Prix de Rome in 1856 and spent four years at the Villa Medici during his stay in Italy. On his return to the capital, Delaunay specialised in large compositions. The State commissioned many works from him. Today, the canvases of the man who was made a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1879 can be seen in the Opéra Garnier, the nave of the Panthéon in Paris and the main staircase of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.
