Her father, Jules Roche, was a member of the National Assembly and cabinet minister and promoter of the avant-garde. Her godmother was the dazzling art patron Countess Élisabeth de Greffulhe Juliette. With the support of her father, Roche studied painting at the Académie Ranson in Paris. There she met Les Nabis, a group that was particularly influenced by Paul Cézanne and Paul Gaugin. In 1914 she took part in a celebrated exhibition at the gallery Bergheim-Jeune. In her artistic work she presents herself to us as an independent woman capable of self-expression. Shortly before the First World War, she went to New York for a long time with her soon-to-be husband, the important Cubist artist Albert Gleizes. Together they moved in the Dada circles around Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia. In 1927, Roche returned to France with her husband; together they founded the Moly-Sabata artist residency in Sablons. In her paintings, Juliette Roche herself makes frequent appearances as a staffage figure. In the present painting, she can be seen as a customer in the shop.
