Lot no. 101
JUVÉNAL. Satires. Paris, Lambert, 1770; 2 vols. large in-8 (229 x 144 mm), olive morocco, smooth spines decorated with a bird, roulette on the covers, fleurons on the corners, lemon yellow paper endpapers, int. dent. and gilt edges (Period bindings). First edition of Dusaulx's highly regarded translation. It opened the doors of the Académie for him. The permanence of human excesses and the moral virtues of satire: in imperial Rome, Juvenal denounces the embarrassments of the great cities, the insolent luxury of the parvenus, the parasites, the religious fanaticism, the misery of the literati... An admirer and correspondent of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Dusaulx could not fail to draw parallels with the men of his time. A VERY GOOD COPY, PRINTED ON LARGE HOLLAND PAPER, LUXURY BINDED BY AN EMULE OF DEROME LE JEUNE (small wormholes on the 2nd plate of vol. I).
