Lot no. 1041
CABINET ON STAND WITH FLORAL MARQUETRY Louis XIII, probably Dutch work, 17th century In the style of Jan van Mekeren (1658-1733). Walnut, burlwood and partly tinted precious woods inlaid with flowers, leaves, grotesques, meshes, birds and gadrooned vases with handles in dark reserves. Double-door upper section with a straight, slightly protruding high cornice, the doors opening onto twelve drawers around a central door. The inside of the fronts inlaid with branches of flowers in dark reserves, the centre door with a bouquet of flowers in a vase. On a stand with seven twisted legs, connected by a surrounding crosspiece on crushed ball feet. The frame with two drawers and cut-out aprons. Bronze mounts. 1 key. 167 × 55 × 192 cm. Good restored condition. Minor flaws and repairs. Due to the quality of its decoration, this cabinet from the second half of the 17th century is reminiscent of marquetry work by the privileged craftsmen of the Parisian workshops, such as the most famous of them, Pierre Gole. He was born in Holland in 1620, was apprenticed in Paris and in 1651, when Louis XIV was of age, was appointed the king's ebenist. The floral-inlaid furniture he made for the king and the court is now in the most prestigious public collections. A cabinet whose door inlays (richer and more precise) have a similar iconography can be found in the Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris (inv. no. 42748). In its choice of floral marquetry and formal language, our cabinet is also reminiscent of Dutch works by Jan van Mekeren, who worked in London (cf. Rijksmuseum, inv. no. BK-1964-12).
