Cale[n]d[er] uffs M.D.XCI. Single leaf print in red and black. With one large and 14 small figurative woodcuts. Composed of 4 segments.
Rorschach, [Leonhard Straub, 1590]. Detail 63 × 20 cm. Framed.
Very rare calendar by St. Gallen's first printer Straub, who founded his print shop in 1578. After various difficulties with the censorship authorities, he was expelled from the city in 1584, moved his business to the neighbourhood of Goldach near Rorschach, converted to the Catholic faith and finally settled in Constance. (Cf. ADB 36, p. 524 f. and Strehler, H. Die Buchdruckerkunst im alten St. Gallen, St. Gallen, 1967, pp. 14-40). - Some browning and foxing, a few minor, neatly executed paper restorations. Some of the segments somewhat irregularly trimmed and with tiny image losses in places.
