Note: Karel Appel (Amsterdam 1921 - Zurich 2006) was a major figure in the Cobra movement (1948-1951). Inspired by Expressionism and primitive art, he developed a free, gestural and colourful style, nourished by spontaneity and vitality. Alongside Asger Jorn, Constant, Corneille and Christian Dotremont, he defended a collective, instinctive creation, free from academic conventions.
The experimental spirit of Cobra had a profound impact on post-war art, making Appel one of the most emblematic representatives of this radical modernity.
