Breydel was a pupil of Pieter Rijsbraeck and Pieter Ykens and then joined his brother as court painter in Kassel with whom he collaborated successfully until 1703. He returned to Antwerp and was registered in the Guild of St. Luke in 1704 and later in Brussels in 1623 and Ghent in 1626. The artist's fortune was dictated by his specialisation in the battle genre, which was highly appreciated by the collectors of the time for its elegance and narrative vivacity, following the example of Adam Frans van der Meulen, but his production also includes landscape and veduta works.
