The half-length model looks directly at the observer, twisting slightly to allow him to rest his left arm on his hips and to create a sense of movement, volume and security. The probable date of 1666 is based on a comparison with the Portrait of a Man (recognisable in Willemn Muilman the Younger) kept in Hanover and signed and dated 1666 (cf. Kilian, cat, 108, col. plate 23). A similarity of clothing can be observed between the two works, with the lace collar, the white shirt sleeves, the open jacket and a similarity of the pictorial conduct and mimicry of the fabrics.
