He then studied at the academies of Prague and Vienna and had a study visit to Teheran. In 1928/1929 Karl May held a teaching position at the Prague Academy. His association with the groups Die Brücke and Der blaue Reiter led to works by him being shown in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition in 1937 and subsequently destroyed. Nevertheless, from 1939 May was a professor at the German State College of Applied Arts in Gablonz. In 1952 May travelled to Canada, where he served as artistic advisor to the Canadian International Trade Fair. May remained in Canada and settled north of Montréal in a valley that was named after him, possibly unofficially, May Valley. May's work in reverse painting on glass, of which he is regarded as an innovator in Canada, became particularly important. However, he also worked in oil, acrylic, gouache, pastel, charcoal, tar and in the field of printmaking. May has had solo exhibitions in Berlin, Vienna, Düsseldorf, Kassel, Munich, Hamburg, Tehran and Chile. In Canada, he has had several solo exhibitions at sales galleries in Toronto and Montréal Toronto and Montreal, and two major exhibitions at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, respectively. In 1976, the Ottawa Public Archives honoured May with a retrospective exhibition.
