Karl Reineke-Altenau (1885 Altenau - 1943 Nauheim) "Skier". Original title Expressive work created between 1918 and 1932 by the artist, who studied at the Royal School of Art in Berlin and initially lived in Hanover from 1912 to 1932 before becoming a freelance painter in Altenau. Reineke-Altenau was a keen skier himself, so he often chose skiers in the Harz Mountains as his motif. From 1913 to 1942, he regularly exhibited his work at exhibitions organised by the Hanover Artists' Association, including one in October 1917, about which a contemporary review stated: "(...) Karl Reinecke-Altenau is an artistic personality of the greatest power. His snowy landscapes stand head and shoulders above many others of their kind (...) Reinecke is an Impressionist (...) Undoubtedly, Reinecke-Altenau is one of Hanover's strongest and most independent artistic personalities (...)".
