He was the son of the well-known sculptor Karl Sterrer (1844-1918), who is known for his monumental figures and monuments. Karl Sterrer completed his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied with Alois Delug and Christian Griepenkerl. In 1908 he received the prestigious Rome Prize, which secured him a scholarship to stay in Rome and had a significant influence on his artistic development. His early works were influenced by Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession; later he increasingly turned to monumental and figural art in public spaces. Sterrer took part in numerous large commissions, including the design of figures for the parliament building in Vienna and the design of stained glass windows and mosaics for churches. During his career he worked in Vienna as well as in other Austrian cities and received several awards for his contribution to the Austrian art scene. He was rector of the Vienna Art Academy from 1937 to 1938. Karl Sterrer died on June 10, 1972 in Vienna, but left behind an important artistic work that significantly influenced Austrian art of the 20th century.
