Karl Weysser studied painting at the Grossherzoglich Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863), among others, where he specialised in architecture and landscape painting in particular. In the course of his artistic career, Weysser not only travelled through his native Baden, to South Tyrol and Alsace, he also came to Switzerland, as the present painting of the market square in Stein am Rhein and his depiction of the Spreuer Bridge in Lucerne (lot 3227) testify. Weysser's numerous paintings of cityscapes, street scenes and house lines often serve as historical pictorial sources due to their realistic depiction. In addition, Weysser's paintings usually show us an enchanted small-town idyll that was inherent to the places he visited in the 19th century, as his view of the streets of Stein am Rhein illustrates.
