Maps - World De Wit, Frederick Hand-coloured world map from the 17th century Nova Orbis Tabula, In Lucem Edita, A. F. De Wit. Amsterdam, c. 1670. Double-sided, partly and border coloured copper engraving on laid paper. 47.5 x 56.6 cm (54 x 62.5 cm). Mounted in dots under passepartout. Shirley 451 - According to Shirley one of the most beautiful world maps of the time. With two hemispheres and two additional, smaller depictions of the poles. The vignettes depict the four seasons, the elements and the signs of the zodiac. The map shows the discoveries of the navigator Abel Janszoon Tasman, which he made around Australia in the years 1642-1644. New Zealand is merely indicated by a coastline, and California is still depicted as an island. The Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit became one of the most important Amsterdam publishers after the closure of Blaeu in 1679. - Paper somewhat browned due to age, slightly fingerstained, the colouring on the verso somewhat worn through, occasional pale brown stains in the margins.
