Lot no. 150
Kasamatsu Shirō (Japan, 1898-1991) Print, oban tate-e, Haru no yoru, Ginza (春の夜 銀座), Spring evening, Ginza. Signed Shiro and artist's stamp Shiro saku. Inscribed in the margin "Evening Spring Ginza" and "Kasamatsu Ginza". Publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and stamp. Dated 4th month of Showa 9 (1934). Size 39.2 x 26.2 cm Although the street is busy, the viewer is placed in a quiet angle allowing him to watch the crowd from a distance, creating a sense of serenity. The small sushi stand in the foreground contrasts with the imposing neon-lit building in the background. The illuminated sign reads "Azuma odori" in red, a type of dance typically practised in summer. Judging by the thick clothing of the passers-by, the scene must have been a cold early spring evening.
