Ein ‚Tafelbild' wie dieses, das zeitlich noch vor den orgiastischen, farbsprühenden, großflächigen Allover-Malereien der Künstlerin entsteht. Nicht so überdimensioniert groß, wofür die Leinwände mit entsprechenden Keilrahmen nicht mehr ausreichen wollen, sondern inzwischen Räume, Fassaden, ganze Straßenzüge und Landschaften von Katharina Grosse mit Sprühfarben übermalt sind. Sie sprengt damit jegliche Vorstellung von Format und möglichen Größen und entwickelt dabei ihr größtmögliches Farb-Potential. Und doch hat Katharina Grosse wie hier die Farbe mit Pinsel Bahn für Bahn, physisch nachvollziehbar mit unterscheidbaren, rhythmisiert nebeneinandergesetzten Pinselzügen auf den Bildträger aufgetragen, nicht blickdicht sondern lasierend, die glatte, nicht saugende Aluminiumtafel sichtbar belassend. Damit sind die haptische Materialität des Bildträgers und die vertikale und darüber horizontale, etwas heller und lasiert aufgetragene Farbe intensiv nachvollziehbar. Katharina Grosse malt ein nahezu monochromes, optisch zweigeteiltes Bild, welches auf die wesentlichen Tugenden klassischer Malerei hinweist: die Übung des malerischen Auftrags. In dem ‚kleinen', 1999 entstandenen Format kann man auch eine kontemplative Besinnung fühlen, ein Konzentrieren auf das Eigentliche: der Vorgang des Malens. Kurz vor dem Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends steht die Künstlerin an der Schwelle, die Vorstellung ihrer malerischen Grenzverschiebung drastisch und expansiv aufzunehmen, den Farbauftrag mit Pinsel durch das Versprühen der Farben zu ersetzen. „Das Sprayen lässt Zugriffe zu“, so die Künstlerin 2004, „die unmittelbar aus dem Sehen kommen, während das Malen von Linien mit dem Pinsel stark aus der Körperbewegung entwickelt wird. Die Bewegung mit dem Auge ist der Bewegung mit der Spraypistole viel verbundener. Man bewegt sich von der vom Körper bestimmten Maßstäblichkeit weg.“ (Katharina Grosse im Gespräch mit Lothar Frangenberg, zit. nach Ulrich Loock, in: Ausst.Kat. Das übergroße Format, das Allover scheint also mit der herkömmlichen Mal-Technik für Katharina Grosse nicht mehr realisierbar; so gesehen ist diese Aluminiumtafel mit dem vertikalen und horizontalen Pinselauftrag ein sehr privates, um nicht zu sagen intimes Werk der Künstlerin. A 'panel painting' such as this one, which was created prior to the artist's orgiastic, colour-spraying, large-scale 'all-over' paintings. This work is not oversized to the extent that canvases with the corresponding stretcher frames no longer suffice, which is why entire rooms, facades, entire streets and landscapes are being painted over with spray paints by Katharina Grosse. She exceeds any imaginable idea of format and conceivable dimensions and thus develops her greatest possible colour potential. And yet Katharina Grosse, as here, has applied the paint with the brush line-by-line, physically comprehensible with distinguishable, rhythmically juxtaposed brush strokes, not opaque, but varnished, leaving the smooth, non-absorbent aluminium panel visible. In this way, the haptic materiality of the support and the vertical and above it horizontal, somewhat lighter and varnished colour is intensely comprehensible. Katharina Grosse paints an almost monochrome, optically two-part picture that refers to the essential virtues of classical painting: the practice of the painterly application. In the 'small' format, created in 1999, one can also feel a contemplative reflection, a concentration on the essential: the process of painting. Shortly before the beginning of the new millennium, the artist is on the threshold of drastically and expansively shifting the perception of her painting boundaries, replacing the application of paint with a brush with the spraying of colours. “Spraying allows access,” says the artist in 2004, “which comes directly from seeing, while the painting of lines with a brush emerges primarily from body movement. The movement with the eye is much more connected with the movement of the spray gun. It appears that for Katharina Grosse, the oversized format, the allover, can thus no longer be realised using conventional painting techniques; seen in this light, this aluminium panel with the vertical and horizontal brush application is a very private, if not to say intimate, work by the artist.
