Ceramic figure of a polar bear on a rock by Søren Kongstrand Earthenware, brick-red body. Fully sculpted, stylised depiction, the polar bear with white, pewter-coloured, finely crackled glaze, the rock with white-black snakeskin glaze. Signed "S Kongstrand". H. 33.5 cm.
The important Danish sculptor and ceramist Søren Kongstrand (1872-1951) began his first ceramic experiments in 1907, in 1911 he turned to ceramics in his own workshop in Esbjerg. From 1911-1916 he exhibited successfully at the Autumn Exhibition of Artists in Copenhagen and from 1912-1917 in Charlottenborg, his glazes were particularly praised.
