First edition of the account of the first voyage of Kerguelen (1734-1797), who was given command of the frigate La Folle by the Duke of Praslin to protect the French cod fishery off Iceland. His account is adorned with 18 out-of-text plates, most of them fold-outs, including 14 maps, plans and coastal views and 4 illustrations by Charles Eisen, depicting an Icelandic lady's costume, a Finnmark inhabitant fighting a bear, Samoyeds on skis and a Lapp in a sledge pulled by a reindeer. Macaulay, all illustrated with a map and 9 repl. views, often very spectacular (Staffa's Cave and Curved Pillars, Buchan's Mudder...). Elegantly bound in marbled green calf (very small worm damage to corner of one cover).
