Paris, Prault, 1771. In-4 (242 x192 mm), marbled green calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons, fillets on covers (Binding of the period). First edition of the account of the first voyage of Kerguelen (1734-1797), who was given command of the frigate La Folle by the Duke of Praslin to protect the French cod fishery off Iceland. His account is adorned with 18 out-of-text plates, most of them fold-outs, including 14 maps, plans and coastal views and 4 illustrations by Charles Eisen, depicting an Icelandic lady's costume, a Finnmark inhabitant fighting a bear, Samoyeds on skis and a Lapp in a sledge pulled by a reindeer. Bound at the top: COXE. Nouveau recueil de voyages au Nord de l'Europe et de l'Asie. Tome 1. Geneva and Paris, Moutard, 1785. This volume contains abridgments of the Observations on the Isles of Scilly, by Dr Borlase, the Descriptions of the Isles of Anglesey by Th Pennant, the Voyage en Écosse et aux îles Hébrides by the same author and by Johnson, the Description de l'Ile Saint Kilda (Hébrides) by K. Macaulay, all illustrated with a map and 9 repl. views, often very spectacular (Staffa's Cave and Curved Pillars, Buchan's Mudder...). Elegantly bound in marbled green calf (very small worm damage to corner of one cover).
