In 1950, Kessel covered for the newspaper Paris-Presse the trial at the Melun assizes of the murder of 18-year-old Alain Guyader by his friend Claude Panconi, who believed him to be rich with an imaginary hoard of money. Kessel wrote "Le procès des enfants perdus" (The trial of the lost children), published by Julliard in 1951.
