KIENER (Louis-Charles). ORIGINAL EDITION OF THIS VERY VAST COLLECTION OF CONCHYLIOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHIES, arranged according to the systems of Cuvier and Lamarck. "This great and beautiful work... perfectly up-to-date with knowledge of conchyliology" (Brunet) was published in 165 issues between 1834 and 1880. It remained unfinished in 1850, at the 138th issue, but was later taken up and continued by P. Fisher. A SUPERB ILLUSTRATION COMPOSED OF 823 (OUT OF 903) METAL ENGRAVED and mostly FINE COLOURED SHELLBOARDS, executed from drawings by Duménil, Maubert, Oudart, Roch, Arnoul, Gontier and others. VERY RARE AND COMPLETE. A copy in accordance with Nissen's collation, except that the two plates bis (Cypræa 20 bis and Fusus 17 bis) and 3 ff. of text (Buccinum, pp. 109-112, and Rotella, pp. 9-10) are missing; also missing is part of the continuation subsequently published by Fischer, namely, in vol. X, the text of the genus Turbo (128 pp.) and the last 6 plates relating to it (pl. 37-42) - pl. 1 to 36 and 1 bis of this monograph being present; and, in volume XI, the text (480 pp.) and 72 plates - 48 plates of the genus Trochus being present (nos. 2-26, 28-43, 45-46, 50-52, 55-56). Some fairly heavy foxing in the text and a few rare yellowed plates, slightly spotted, some plates rebacked. Minor spotting to bindings. Nissen, ZBI, n°2183 - Brunet, III, 659.
