Classicist krater vase with relief decoration by Meissen Over a raised, fluted and multi-jointed, gilded round base, a pressed, bulbous body with a stepped, cylindrical neck, merging into a wide, sweeping mouth. Gilt handles on the sides in leaf relief. Fine, white relief overlay of bisque porcelain on a violet-grey ground. Both sides of the wall with mythological figures accompanied by children above a frieze of anthemions and bell-shaped flowers. Model no. Q 93, designed by Johann Daniel Schöne. Unmarked rest; crossed swords mark. H. 19.5 cm. In the early 19th century, under the direction of Carl Wilhelm von Oppel, the Meissen manufactory created decorations in the style of the classicist relief overlays of antique motifs on jasperware from the English Wedgwood manufactory in Etruria. John Flaxman (1755 - 1826), an English sculptor and illustrator, became the leading figure of revitalised classicism. Wedgwood was a leader in the realisation of these designs in ceramics. Cf. cat.
