Kobayashi Kiyochika (Japan, 1847-1915) Print, oban yoko-e, from the series Tokyo meisho zue (東京名所図 ), Famous Views of Tokyo, Edobashi plate yūgure Fuji (江戸橋夕暮富士), Mount Fuji at dusk from Edo Bridge. Signed Kobayashi Kiyochika. Publisher Fukuda Kumajirō (Gusokuya). Dated Meiji 10 (1877), [1879]. Dim. 24.8 x 36.5 cm This print reveals the importance of gas lighting in Kiyochika's experiments with light. Not only were gas lamps the first form of lighting in the 1870s, they were also a source of inspiration for Kiyochika. Here, the street lamp illuminates the pine tree in the foreground, highlighting the pillar of the bridge and revealing the silhouette of a rickshaw driver.
