Dim. 24,8 x 36,4 cm A carriage, its driver hidden in the half-light, speeds along Honchō Avenue, deserted except for a stray dog and a man protecting himself with an umbrella. Western gas lighting casts a harsh glow over the scene. This type of horse-drawn carriage was introduced by the West during the Meiji era and was more expensive than rickshaws.
