Very rare first Russian periodical free from state censorship. This socialist journal of libertarian and revolutionary inspiration, founded by Alexander Ivanovich Herzen and Nicholas Platonovich Ogarev, appeared in London from 1857 to 1865, then in Geneva from 1865 to 1869, in both Russian and French versions. It had a profound influence in Russia despite the ferocity of tsarist censorship. This volume contains the fourteen issues published in French from 1 January to 1 December 1868, with the supplement of 15 February 1869, and the seven issues published in Russian from January to June 1868.
