The versatile artist, who worked as a painter, author, photographer and singer, became known as one of the most important Russian non-conformists in the wake of the collapse of the USSR in the 1980s. In 1990 he took part in the 44th Venice Biennale, in 1991 in documenta IX in Kassel, in 2003 again in the 50th Venice Biennale.
