Lot no. 39
KRETSCHMER (Albert). People's costumes in Germany. German national costumes. Original drawings with explanatory text. Deutsche Volkstrachten. Leipsig, J. G. Bach, 1870. Gd in-4, illustrated with an engraved frontispiece-title, and 88 lithographed plates in colour, each with its own bilingual French and German notice page. Bound in later half-fauwn morocco with corners, spine ribbed, decorated and dated at tail, burgundy morocco title-piece. Head gilt. Printed covers preserved. Albert Kretschmer was a painter and costume designer at the Royal Theatre in Berlin. The work was printed in colour at J. G. Bach's lithographic institute in Leipsig. The lively scenes do more than just depict costumes and textiles. They depict villages and countryside, forests and mountains. A few stains on the morocco, rare foxing, a few pages of text browned. The plates are very fresh and the colours vibrant. (Colas, 1669)
