KUNIYOSHI (1798-1861)
Triptych of oban-tate prints, illustrating a scene from the kabuki play "Zôho Tsukushi no iezuto", depicting on the two right-hand leaves, a scene between the Daimyô Katô Sayemon, retired to Koyasan to become the monk Karukaya-Doshin, and Ishido-maru, his son, who is looking for his father; Ishido-maru, not wishing to be disturbed in his new life, does not at first tell the young man that he is his father, but eventually reveals it to him, under the seal of secrecy. The sheet on the left shows Tamaya no Yoji, another of the play's protagonists, defending a woman, possibly his own, against an attack by brigands.
(Insolate, framed under glass).
Japan, late Edo period (1602-1868), mid-19th century.
KUNIYOSHI (1798-1861), A TRIPTYCH WITH KARUKAYA-DOSHIN AND ISHIDO-MARU, JAPAN, LATE EDO PERIOD (1602-1868), MID-19TH CENTURY.
DIM. (VIEW) 35,5 X 69,5 CM (14 X 27 3/8 IN.)
NOTE
It should be noted that in the versions of this triptych in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the British Museum, the leaf on the left is different, showing Tamaya no Yoji standing alone and not involved in a combat scene. The connections between the landscape and the central leaf seem more or less appropriate in both cases, although our print seems more suitable.
